Sassafras      Atherosperma Moschatu

Sassafras is quite unique in that the timber from these trees is sold in two different forms. First, the straight Golden Sassafras that is a pale grey with splendid golden tones. The second form is the extremely rare Blackheart Sassafras, which is the same tree but is one that has been stained by a natural occurring fungi. A Sassafras tree can grow over 140 feet tall, with a diameter of 3 feet, and reach ages of 150–200 years, if the conditions allow.

Both forms are easily worked as it is light and strong with a Janka rating of 4.7. Whilst it is suitable for furniture and joinery it is popular for turning and bending.
